Why cancer surgery — and why here?

Training at Tata Memorial Hospital teaches two things at once: the highest technical standard in the country, and humility — because outcomes depend as much on listening as on technique. On doing the right operation for the right patient, not the impressive one.

Nine years and more than five thousand operations later, one conviction has held: patients do not remember publications. They remember whether someone finally explained the disease in their own language, whether the plan made sense, and whether the phone was answered when it mattered.
