In his own words

Why cancer surgery — and why here?

“I chose surgical oncology because it is the one specialty where you meet people at their most frightened — and where skill, honesty and time can genuinely change how the story ends.”

Training at Tata Memorial Hospital teaches two things at once: the country’s highest technical standard, and humility — because you operate beside masters and still learn that outcomes depend on listening, on judgement, on doing the right operation for the right patient rather than the impressive one.

Nine years and more than five thousand operations later, one conviction has only deepened: patients don’t remember publications. They remember whether someone finally explained the disease in their own language — Gujarati, Hindi or English — whether the plan made sense, and whether the phone was answered when worry came at midnight.

That is the practice built in Ahmedabad and Vadodara: treat the person, not just the cancer; preserve voice, breast, kidney and limb wherever oncology allows; and speak truth early, gently and completely.
